This is Sandra, my favorite art teacher. I painted this portrait last year, a very large portrait, painted in the manner of Alice Neal, a twentieth century portrait painter. This was an assignment painting, to paint a painting in the "manner" and size of an artist, thus the larger size. It is painted in oil paints, and though it was challenging, it was quite enjoyable to complete the project. Sandra sat for small drawings, and copious photos, and she was the best model one could ask for, being an artist herself.

Time for a great summer day at the beach. This is an oil painting just loaded with oil paint, white over an undercovering of blues and reds, yieldig a pinkish tint peeping through the white area. The Chair, Oils on Canvas, 24x18, is a painting completed using many layers of glazes, especially in the rich background areas. Right after Hurricane Katrina, my husband lost a battle with infection in his foot. The doctors encouraged him to let them take the leg off just above the knee, which is what happened. Two weeks later, he was well and back to work, first of the year. I also lost my beloved art classes, so had to go to University of South Alabama, an hour's drive east to Mobile, Alabama, where I could take oil painting classes. I wanted to paint some arbitrary chair, and my teacher encouraged me to photo and paint Tom's wheelchair instead. Although I did so reluctantly, the lesson was to paint things with some depth of meaning, thereby painting through difficult life processes. The chair is intentionally not symetrical, recalling Tom's reality now, with asymetrical legs. The paiting recalls aspects of very trying times for my husband, and is a symbol of ability rather than his new disability.

Blue Crab Social, 18x24, Acrylics, is one of my first acrylic paintings; it is, for me, a happy painting with fun colors and lines. I struggled with the paint drying so fast and had to go back and get those wonderful purply colors that I just could not seem to mix for myself. The purples and blues and finally the plants, which I had to just slow down and paint, leaf by leaf, finally came together into a wonderful party scene. I can just imagine the crab having sent out invitations to the elements in the painting, and all came together finally, into this party of symbolism.

This painting of a red dress and navy shoes with a glowing reflection surrounding the doorknob through nearby filtered afternoon sunlight was a lot of fun to paint. It recieved a prize for best expressive painting, 2006, Ocean Springs Art Association.
